Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa, 28 Ministers Take Oath

J Jayalalithaa took oath for the sixth time as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister


AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was sworn in for the sixth time at Madras University’s Centenary Hall on Monday.  The swearing-in ceremony started at noon with Governor K Rosiah administering the oath of office and oath of secrecy to Jayalalithaa at 12:05pm. This is the second time in 32 years that an incumbent Chief Minister is being sworn in for a consecutive term, with Jayalaluthaa emulating the feat of her mentor and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran.

Election Results 2016: BJP Takes Assam, Jayalalithaa, Mamata Thank People For Big Wins

 Sarbananda Sonowal will be the new chief minister of Assam with the BJP winning Assam, while West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have chosen to retain their powerful women chief ministers, Mamata Banerjee and J Jayalalithaa.

In an emphatic mandate, the BJP is leading in 87 of Assam’s 126 assembly seats, with the Congress, which ruled for the last 15 years, trailing way behind at 23.

Against the Congress’ Tarun Gogoi, the BJP projected for chief minister Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who said when it became clear that his party had won, “We are committed to the people of Assam.”

Exit polls: BJP set to storm Assam, Mamata in Bengal, LDF in Kerala, close contest in TN

As the curtains came down Monday on assembly elections in four states and an Union Territory, exit polls predicted an anti-incumbent mood in all states except West Bengal. All polls predicted a BJP win in Assam, raising party hopes of its first government in a north-eastern state when votes are counted May 19.

The Congress, which pollsters said was set to be dislodged from Assam after 15 years, seemed to be on its way out in Kerala too with exit polls predicting the return of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front.
